Most books in the Library can be checked out. However, there are some books in particular collections that must be used in the Library. These books will be listed in the Library catalog as "Non-Circulating" or be located in College Archives & Special Collections or Focused Collections, in which case they may be used by appointment.
Non-Circulating books may be artist's books or other rare books, Columbia student theses, or books that are mostly images.
